FORECAST: Storm clouds are on the horizon in this fun, fast-paced novel of an affluent Mexican-American family from the author of the #1 Los Angeles Times bestseller Esperanza’s Box of Saints

L。A。 is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain。 He’s harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else。 His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage。 Their three daughters—Claudia, a television chef with a hard-hearted attitude; Olivia, a successful architect who suffers from gentrification guilt; and Patricia, a social media wizard who has an uncanny knack for connecting with audiences but not with her lovers—are blindsided and left questioning everything they know。 Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way。

With quick wit and humor, Maria Amparo Escandón follows the Alvarado family as they wrestle with impending evacuations, secrets, deception, and betrayal, and their toughest decision yet: whether to stick together or burn it all down。

I listened to L。A。 Weather in one sitting (double-time while at work) and I'm happy to report that it was entertaining and satisfying。 The risk you run when you have a lot of characters is that the story will end up scattered。 Ms。 Escandon did a fine job tackling all the plots and subplots that twist and turn around each other。 As someone who comes from a big family, I can attest to the authenticity of chaos and unflinching familial love that we forget sometimes is as unconditional as it is。 At I listened to L。A。 Weather in one sitting (double-time while at work) and I'm happy to report that it was entertaining and satisfying。 The risk you run when you have a lot of characters is that the story will end up scattered。 Ms。 Escandon did a fine job tackling all the plots and subplots that twist and turn around each other。 As someone who comes from a big family, I can attest to the authenticity of chaos and unflinching familial love that we forget sometimes is as unconditional as it is。 At first, we are as confused by Oscar's behavior as his wife, Keila, is。 Why is he so obsessed with the weather? Has he lost it maybe? Is it dementia perhaps? Whatever the reason, Oscar is driving Keila to distraction, and by distraction, I mean of the male variety。 As she contemplates burning down her marriage and the life she has built with her husband, the reaction of their three daughters takes the stage in turns。 Good stuff here。If you love family dramas with a strong sense of place, L。A。 Weather might be just the perfect read (or listen) for you。 。。。more

I enjoyed this one so much。 This is a character driven story about a year in the life of the Alvarado family, a Catholic-Jewish Mexican family living in L。A。 It is a slow burn and took a minute to keep the characters straight in the beginning, but after that each and every one of them grew on me and I could not put this down until I was done。 Oscar is the patriarch of the family, and is weather-obsessed as L。A。 is currently going through a drought and he desperately wants some rain。 His wife Kei I enjoyed this one so much。 This is a character driven story about a year in the life of the Alvarado family, a Catholic-Jewish Mexican family living in L。A。 It is a slow burn and took a minute to keep the characters straight in the beginning, but after that each and every one of them grew on me and I could not put this down until I was done。 Oscar is the patriarch of the family, and is weather-obsessed as L。A。 is currently going through a drought and he desperately wants some rain。 His wife Keila desperately wants some intimacy and is ready to end their marriage。 They have three grown daughters - Claudia, a television chef; Olivia, a successful architect; and Patricia, a social media wizard; and they each will be forced to take a look at their relationships and make some tough decisions along the way。Everyone is going through something that inevitably affects the family and you will wonder how are they going to make it through and remain together。 There are secrets, lies, kleptomaniacs, I’m telling you, this family is messy。 And let’s not forget the weather, which is a huge factor running throughout the story and is almost a character in and of itself。 I loved the interactions with the family members, good and bad, and I was vested in this family, rooting for each and every one of them and I was not ready for my time with them to be over。 Thank you to Flatiron Books and NetGalley for the gifted copy to review and for having me on this tour! 。。。more

When a book opens with a scene where three-year-old twins accidentally fall into a pool and there's no one around, you know it will not be a boring read。In L。A。 Weather we follow a year in the life of a Jewish/Mexican family, the Alvarados。 They are seemingly well off and have an impressive family ancestry, but as we very quickly find out, things are nowhere near as great as they might seem on the surface。 The parents, Keila and Oscar, are on the brink of a divorce, and their three daughters are When a book opens with a scene where three-year-old twins accidentally fall into a pool and there's no one around, you know it will not be a boring read。In L。A。 Weather we follow a year in the life of a Jewish/Mexican family, the Alvarados。 They are seemingly well off and have an impressive family ancestry, but as we very quickly find out, things are nowhere near as great as they might seem on the surface。 The parents, Keila and Oscar, are on the brink of a divorce, and their three daughters are dealing with issues of their own。 There's also another, subtle yet crucially significant main character - the titular L。A。 weather。 The themes of family, betrayal, and forgiveness are woven together with weather and climate, and the importance of the latter themes emerges deep into the book。 There's definitely a lot of drama in this story, and at times it read almost soap opera-like, but I didn't mind because I was hooked right from the start。 I would actually love to see this book adapted into TV series。 I loved the secrets, the plot twists, and the constant tension! I also enjoyed the message of this book and when a certain part made me realize which year this book is set in (I somehow completely missed it before it became an important plot point), I gasped out loud。 As far as the characters go, it took me a second to remember who's who, and for a very long time I kept getting Olivia and Patricia mixed up because they seemed the blandest to me。 Even with that, I ended up rooting for all the Alvarados and their beautiful bond。 。。。more

Reading a book about a family weathering a drought and wildfires is a bit surreal considering the current status of our state。 (Pun somewhat intended。) The story follows the Alvarado family during one year, 2016。 I'll admit I am a bit skeptical that so much could have happened within the confines of those 365 days, but it did make for interesting reading。 I liked the balance between Oscar's overall secret, the smaller secrets of others in the family, and the general "slice of life" feel to the s Reading a book about a family weathering a drought and wildfires is a bit surreal considering the current status of our state。 (Pun somewhat intended。) The story follows the Alvarado family during one year, 2016。 I'll admit I am a bit skeptical that so much could have happened within the confines of those 365 days, but it did make for interesting reading。 I liked the balance between Oscar's overall secret, the smaller secrets of others in the family, and the general "slice of life" feel to the story。 This resulted in a rich read that kept me wanting to read but also lulled me in to their family life。 With so many characters, I was impressed with how well each one was developed and how unique they were。 Additionally, the combination of familial love and subtle bits of humor kept what could have been an overall depressing book。Thanks to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for a copy of the book。 This review is my own opinion。 。。。more

Oscar and Keila have been married almost forty years, but due to Oscar’s obsession with the weather, they may be headed toward divorce。 Their daughters, Claudia, Olivia, and Patricia, are also married, but once they hear about their parents’ impending divorce, they start questioning their own relationships, as well。 The book takes us on a year-long journey as the Alvarados face some big issues。 The reader will likely find themselves, as I did, asking some hard questions: Is my family adequately Oscar and Keila have been married almost forty years, but due to Oscar’s obsession with the weather, they may be headed toward divorce。 Their daughters, Claudia, Olivia, and Patricia, are also married, but once they hear about their parents’ impending divorce, they start questioning their own relationships, as well。 The book takes us on a year-long journey as the Alvarados face some big issues。 The reader will likely find themselves, as I did, asking some hard questions: Is my family adequately prepared if I were to become incapacitated? How am I contributing to the state of the environment? Am I making the most of my life? Am I a good parent? A good wife? Why don’t I cook more authentic Mexican food? (That last one may just be because I’m hungry。)Overall, I liked the book。 I loved the way Amparo Escandon is not afraid to get political。 I enjoyed the transparency of her writing, the wearing of her activist’s heart on her proverbial sleeve。 I struggled a bit with the depth of the characters。 The real strength of this novel is in the author herself - her voice, her convictions, her contribution。 Unfortunately, for me, that didn’t quite translate into her characters (with the exception of Oscar) or the story itself。 I liked the characters, but I didn’t connect to them。 I didn’t become invested in the outcome of the story, but I hung on every word of the author’s thoughts on climate change, immigration, the L。A。 community, and what it means to her to be “a Californian。” I would love to see some non-fiction work from her, particularly something auto-biographical。 I recommend the book, as it provides detailed insight into California weather patterns and the disastrous impact of climate change。 We need more authors who aren’t afraid to speak the truth and hold us accountable。 This one should be on shelves Tuesday, September 7, 2021。Thanks to Maria Amparo Escandon, Flatiron Books and Netgalley for this ARC in return for my honest review。 。。。more
